Yesterday I could not connect to Windows live messenger, it gave me error 81000395 telling me that the service was not avaliable. This morning the problem is still there…so I googled a little bit to find solution. I found a lot of thing but noone worked
1) Uninstall and reinstall (did not work)
2) Uninstall and reinstall old version (It tells me that I need to upgrade an I cannot log)
3) Disable firewall
4) Dance some macumba in front of the the pc…..still not work
5) The laptop connected well so the problem is on my desktop….
Then I found this post.
It seems absurd, but here what it happened. This post told you to enable logging, then send the log to the team that will help you to find the solution. I follow the instructions, and deleted all files that are in the Messenger received file folder, then enable logging, then try to log and…..the problem was gone
. Then I disconnect and try to connect again….no way.
After 10 minutes I discovered that the problem is originated from Avg antivirus, when I disabled the MSN protection everything works again. After 4 years is the first time that AVG gives me problem, now I keep MSN protection deactivated, and I’ll wait for some upgrade.

Thank you for this. I’d searched for days trying to figure out what was going on and disabling that in AVG worked.
Many thanks.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve suddenly had exactly the same problem, googled it to find the install/uninstall options (done that twice) and was begining to despair.
I use AVG (and haven’t had problems before either – it normally just works), tried your fix and I’m now signed into MSN just fine!

I have AVG where do I go to diable MSN protection
July 23rd, 2008 at 1:59 am
@richard: Simply open avg doing double click on the icon on the systray, then double click “Web Shield”, go to the Instant Messaging tab and you will find “MSN Protection”.
@el buggo: I used AVG for a lot of time, I found to be quite good, far superior so symantec, and this is really the first problem I had.
From the amount of comments I suppose that there are really a lot of people with my same problem, hope AVG will solve the problem soon.
I’m happy to have helped you all.

To disable MSN, open AVG, dble click on web shield, there are two tabs (web/Instant messaging), click on instant messaging. Untick MSN protection box. Save Changes. Now open MSN messenger…log in.

Disabling MSN Protection in AVG REALLY WORKS! I was sceptical despite all the positive reviews on this method, but I am so glad I have been proven wrong!

I don’t have AVG (which most of the posts which fix this tells you to adjust). To fix this, I went to: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/forumarchives... and followed steps 7 and 8.
